Al Miller has been
watching Great Lakes boats since 1970 and writing about them for more than 15 years. As a
business reporter for the Duluth News-Tribune in the mid-'80s, he covered Great
Lakes shipping and Minnesota's taconite industry. His work took him to ore docks,
grain elevators and taconite mines, and aboard dozens of Great Lakes and saltwater
freighters. Since 1987, his articles about Great Lakes shipping have appeared in
such journals and magazines as Inland Seas, American Neptune, Minnesota History, Minnesota
Monthly and Nor'Easter (Journal of the Lake Superior Marine Museum Association). Today,
Miller is a writer, editor and photographer for the University of
Wisconsin-Superior.
