2nd annual Boatnerd Gatherings

A day of boatwatching and river cruising is planned for Saturday, July 14 on Fawn Island in the St. Clair River.

The day starts with two cruises on the St. Clair River aboard the 54-foot, 40 passenger charter vessel Hammond Bay.

Later in the afternoon, a BBQ with the opportunity for boatnerds to meet and socialize is planned while watching ships pass close by.

Attendees may start arriving after 9:00 a.m. and spend the day boatwatching or choose to take one of the cruises.

There will be interesting people to chat with and many activites: Learn from local historian, Al Mann (published in Telescope), win desirable Boatnerd stuff, watch the 1963 bartender of the South American mix your beverage of choice, slide/video shows and more boatnerding.

5:30 p.m. Dinner. Bring along something to throw on the grill (open flame galley). Balance of the fixin's provided.

$4.00. The docks to Fawn Is.are on St. Clair Parkway (east of the island) & will be "Boatnerd" marked. Take Fawn Island Water Taxi $5.00. Share a ride with fellow Boatnerds.

WHAT TO BRING: Lawn chair, binoculars, scanners, cameras, happy smiling faces, "adult" beverage of choice, meat to grill of choice, slides &/or videos. Swim if you like.

Two cruises are planned on the 54-foot, 40 passenger charter vessel Hammond Bay, departing at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. from Fawn Island, located across from Sombra, Ontario and Marine City, Michigan. Parking is available at the gravel dock on the Canadian side, and transportation to the island is provided be a water taxi for a nominal fee. Bluewater Ferry Company's "Daldean" transports vehicles between Marine City and Sombra for $4.00 per car.

Cost of the cruise is $22.00 Canadian funds per person, which includes a 3 hour narrated scenic trip, pointing out landmarks, local history, and information on passing ships. We'll cruise up along the Canadian side to Stag Island, and return along the U.S. shoreline to Fawn Island. A cold buffet lunch is included.
