3rd annual Boatnerd Gathering East
Welland Canal
Oct. 18 & 19


The series of Gatherings concludes at the Welland Canal during the fall grain rush. Each fall freighters carrying grain are busy moving the harvest from the heart land of North America down the Seaway. Be there to catch all the action.

Please note, the meeting is very informal and events are all optional.

There is parking along the west side of the building and plenty more along the
streets nearby.

Coast Guard Open House
The Canadian Coast Guard search and rescue vessel CGR 100 will host an open house from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. CGR 100 is at the Coast Guard Station inside the harbor at Port Weller, north of lock 1. The station is located on the Welland Canal. 
 
Visitors are welcome but they will be restricted to the Coast Guard station and will not be allowed access to areas adjacent to the Coast Guard station.

CGR 100 is a Multi Task Medium Endurance Lifeboat Medium range with moderate to high speed, capable of operating in all weather conditions in semi sheltered waters - station mode.
Directions: The road along the West side of the Welland canal (the road Lock 3 viewing area and museum is on) is Government Road. Follow Government Road Northbound as far as you can go, past lock 1 and the northern approach wall. There you will find a fenced area with a gate, which will be open. Enter the compound and continue until you get to the CG station.

Saturday, October 19

Yard Tour of International Marine Salvage
Take pictures of Kinsman Enterprise, Algogulf and Comeaudoc East side of the canal, go south to the end of Welland Street, past the Hamilton Marine office, and turn right into dirt road.  Meet at office next to truck scale.

Boatwatching and museum tour at the Lock 3 Visitors Center
Visitors center and viewing platform are free to enter. There is a charge to tour the museum. The museum is offering a 2 for 1 admission price for those attending the Boatnerd Gathering.

Things to remember
Be sure to bring warm clothes, will fall in full swing it may turn chilly.
The Welland Canal is a favorite spot among the boatwatchers. A viewing platform is located at the Lock 3 Visitors Center. There is easy access by car from Lock 1 to Lock 7 on Government Road, convenient for chasing ships up and down the canal. It takes only a few minutes to drive from Lock 1 to 7.

If crossing the boarder be sure to have two pieces of I.D.

Other Ideas
A short drive north will take you to Port Dalhousie, the end of the second canal.

For those wishing to explore the southern part of the Welland Canal, a trip trough Welland and onto Port Colborne to see Lock 8 can be made by driving a half hour south.

From the Inn at Lock 7 Niagara Falls is only a few minutes drive.

The region is also host to many wineries.

The Inn at Lock 7 is holding a block of rooms for the Gathering.
