Brand new excursion steamers United States (right) and Theodore Roosevelt (left) at berths in Michigan City, IN in 1908.
On June 24, 1910, the United States was being stern-towed to her berth by the tug C. W. Elphicke. The tow line parted, the steamer hit the Franklin Street Bridge, knocking span onto the aft decks of both ships, sinking the tug. The tugs funnel is just above the water in the foreground.
