5/2 - Historical Perspectives - William Forsythe

This 1908 postcard shows an unknown whaleback barge and freighter up bound at the Soo Locks.

The whaleback Samuel Mather was renamed Clifton in 1923. On September 22, 1924 a gale on Lake Huron took the ship and crew under and they remain there to this day.

This postcard shows the "Houghton Blockade" at the Soo. It lasted from September 5-10, 1899. The whalebacks shown left to right are "118", "105" and the E. B. Bartlett were among close to a hundred others stopped by the sunken freighter downstream.

This postcard shows the Bay Port (ex- E. B. Bartlett) renamed in 1905 to work on the Atlantic Coast. On December 14, 1916 she was wrecked in the Cape Cod Canal. The wreck was later dynamited into oblivion.
