 Indiana Harbor laid up in the Bethlehem Slip during the 1984-85 time period. The ore pits on the dock have flooded from lack of use and demolition had just started on the blast furnaces.

This loader one became operational in 1939. In recent years between 4 and 5 million tons have been loaded at this facility annually. Sandusky is one of the last of the stationary loading docks-newer loaders are conveyors which move alongside the ship. In Sandusky, ships have to be shifted during the loading process. So here is an explanation of what you are seeing.
First shot-Rail car with about 100 tons of coal is shunted into place by an Atlas pusher.
Second -Pig or Barney comes up from beneath and between the tracks and pushes car towards ship loader. Pig weighs about 10 tons.
Third -(from deck of ship) shows car being pushed into the loader-there’s a bang as it hits the empty car and pushes it out.
Fourth-Car in loader is lifted between 50 and 70 feet into the air.
Fifth -Car is then turned on its side to empty contents into loader.
Sixth -Coal comes out chute and into hold of ship.
Seventh -Telescope operator is the one who loads the ship. In recent years, this operation has been done by remote control from deck of ship.
Eighth -Coal being distributed in the hold.
Ninth -Shot from bow looking back at stern with boom swung out over starboard side allowing ship loader to get into all the holds.
Under optimum conditions a ship such as CSL Niagara can be loaded with 30 to 32 thousand tons of coal in about 8 hours.
The Sandusky ship loader also has a conveyer to assist in the loading. The conveyor is at the top of the loader roughly in the same area as where the rail car is tipped. The conveyor was added to the ship loader in 1967. Our thanks to Captain Lars Bouman and crew of CSL Niagara for their cooperation and assistance. Captain Bouman retired following the 2005 season. The SS L. M. Bowers was operated by the Tomlinson Fleet (Cleveland, Oh) under the bridge cranes. These are 4 Clam type bucket iron ore unloaders, each capable of scooping about 15 tons on every bite. They were operated by 4 men who rode on them from shipside to where the ore was to be unloaded, back and forth all day till the ship was unloaded.
