Historical Perspectives - On December 11, 1979, while about 11 miles off Manitou Island near the Keweenaw Peninsula, the Ashland's engine stalled due to a faulty relay switch. Caught in heavy weather and wallowing in the wave troughs, she put out a distress call. True to Great Lakes tradition four vessels immediately came to her assistance. -  Pictures from the CSU William G. Mather collection.
