Lake Superior Icebreaking
- Canadian Coast Guard

This video was taken from a Canadian Coast Guard ice reconnaissance flight over Whitefish Bay on eastern Lake Superior April 7th
It shows some of the 18 commercial vessels in need of icebreaking assistance from the Canadian and American Coast Guards.
The red and white ship seen in this video is the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker CCGS Samuel Risley.
CCGS Samuel Risley spent five days ramming and backing through very difficult ice conditions, creating tracks for the ships to safely transit to their ports of call around Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes.  Additional Coast Guard icebreakers providing assistance on Lake Superior are CCGS Pierre Radisson, and the United States Coast Guard Cutters Mackinaw, Alder and Katmai Bay.
