Built by Chicago Ship Building Co. of Chicago, IL as hull # 68. Launched on April 16, 1906 as J. PIERPONT MORGAN for the Pittsburgh Steamship Co. of Cleveland, OH and entered service in June of 1906. Dimensions: 601’ LOA x 58’ beam x 32’ depth; 7161 GRT 5530 NRT. Cargo Capacity: 12,500 tons. Powered by a 1,875 ihp triple expansion steam engine. The J. PIERPONT MORGAN was the first 601 foot vessel on the Lakes. In April of 1937 two new Babcock & Wilcox water tube boilers were installed. In April 1940 new tank top and hopper sides were fitted. Tonnage changed in 1941 to 7673 GRT, 6099 NRT Tonnage again changed in 1947 to 7709 NRT, 6136 GRT. Pittsburgh Steamship Co. named changed to United States Steel Corp. in 1952. On November 11, 1960 the J. PIERPONT MORGAN was laid up in Duluth MN until 1965 when the vessel was sold to Canadian interests; Q&O (Quebec and Ontario Transportation Co. Ltd. of Thorold, Ont.) affiliate Comet Enterprises Ltd. of Hamilton, Bermuda. The ship was move to Port Arthur Shipyard in December of 1965 to be reconditioned and returned to service in the Spring of 1966 as HERON BAY (2). Canadian tonnage was listed as 8887 GRT, 6574 NRT. In 1976 ownership was transferred to another Q&O affiliate, Trico Enterprises Ltd. of Hamilton, Bermuda. Final lay-up was on November 4, 1978 at Lauzon, Que. Later that year she was sold to Union Pipe & Machinery Ltd. of Montreal, Que. and renamed HERON B. Scrapping began on March 30, 1979 and was completed by the end of 1979.
