American Republic
carries the Olympic Flame

June 9, 1996
American Steam Ship Companies 635' Ameican Republic was docked at Detroit's Hart Plaza to take it's unique place in the 1996 Olympic Torch relay.

At 10:15 A.M. EST, amid heavy rain, the Olympic Flame was brought on board to light a deck mounted cauldron (mounted on the number 4 hatch cover). The American Republic carried the flame across Lake Erie and reached its dock at Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame shortly before 8:00 P.M.
