June 9, 1996 American Steam Ship Companies 635' Ameican Republic was docked at Detroit's Hart Plaza to take it's unique place in the 1996 Olympic Torch relay. At 10:15 A.M. EST, amid heavy rain, the Olympic Flame was brought on board to light a deck mounted cauldron (mounted on the number 4 hatch cover). The American Republic carried the flame across Lake Erie and reached its dock at Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame shortly before 8:00 P.M.
