Detail : In a crippled condition, she was run ashore to save her from sinking. Those aboard were rescued by Lifesaving Service. Bound Oswego for Chicago. She had had a similar accident near the same spot the previous year. Usls report has long description of her loss.
Also knocked down by a white squall Jun 18, 1872 on Lake Huron. Crew rescued by the passing schooner STARLIGHT.
One source reports her as a scow-schooner.
Major repair in 1882.

Detail : She was a twin-screw, and the main theory of her loss in good weather was that her starboard shaft coupling came loose and shaft slid out the stern, allowing water to flood through the sleeve. Detail : Bound for Chicago, she was driven ashore and demolished. Eight passengers [including an entire family of 7] & 1 crewman were lost. The remainder of the crew made it to the shelter of the brig OLIVE RICHMOND, which had gone ashore nearby. One young woman passenger was later found in the cabin, frozen solid in an upright position, with arms outstretched.
This vessel is mentioned many times in early Great Lakes lore.
A schr THOMAS JEFFERSON was reported wrecked at Chicago with the loss of 2 lives in November, 1839.

Detail : Bound Chicago for St. Joseph, she was overwhelmed by a storm when approaching the latter port and sank up to her decks. Her crew clung to her ice-coated rigging for eight hours until rescued from shore by a hastily-formed group of lifesavers in a rowboat. The rescue crew was led by Capt. Nelson Napier, who was skipper of the steamer ALPENA(qv) when that vessel was lost in 1880. Capt. J. Prindiville related this story in detail after the ALPENA was lost.

Detail : Bound Toronto to Kingston, she drove ashore after dragging her anchors in a gale, and became a total loss of $34,000, vessel & cargo. She had come under the point for the night and anchored to ride out the gale, but the wind shifted during the night, driving her ashore. A desperate effort by locals on shore failed to save her crew, who had clung to the rigging until they dropped off one by one and perished.
Out of Port Stanley.
The loss of this vessel helped stimulate the government in to suveying the adjoining bay for conversion to a harbor of refuge.

She was run ashore to prevent her sinking after colliding with the schooner LIVELY off Sheboygan, WI, in Sep, 1866. Damage heavy.

Detail : Bound Chicago for Buffalo she beat all the way down L. Huron during a succession of several storms, but was finally blown ashore 2 mi W of Fairport and sank. Her crew climbed her rigging, but she came broadside to and dipped them in the icy water with every roll. She finally washed them to their deaths one by one before help could arrive. The farm on the bluff above her, and which had sent to the town for help to the unknown schooner below, was actually the home of the JOHNSONís lost mate, who had been put in charge of the boat by his brother, the skipper.

Probably same vessel as reported sunk in a storm near the Point Petre Lighthouse, Nov 25, 1877. This or another JULIA was reported wrecked near Oswego in 1887(!).
