AMHERSTBURG, November 2. -The propeller Celtic coaled here last night. She had on board 140 tons of dynamite and a quantity of nitroglycerine for the Canada Pacific Railway, which she is taking to Lake Superior. Coming up Lake Erie she encountered a terrible gale, causing her to pitch so as to throw the boxes of explosives around in too lively a way to suit those on board. The hair of some of the crew was still on end when the boat reached here. The coal-heavers breathed easier when the last pound of coal was put on. Note: The small propeller CELTIC made it to Lake Superior without mishap and lasted until sunk in a collision ten years later |
