Upper Great Lakes Captains Association
INDUSTRY DAYS CONFERENCE - February 17, 18 and 19, 2000
Traverse City, Michigan

January 24, 2000

Dear Captains and Friends:

Enclosed with this letter you will find the tentative agenda for this year's Industry Days conference. The agenda has taken longer to compile this year because some segments of the program in the past were handled by Group Soo, which have withdrawn their support as a co-sponsor of the Industry Days. As a consequence, a lot of personal contacts had to be made by the UGLCA director.

We feel we have a great program covering a lot of issues that many of you guys had requested in previous critiques. We will start out Thursday, February 17, at 1:00 p.m. Thursday will be devoted to Coast Guard issues and we have several Coast Guard personnel: MSO Chicago, Grand Haven, the 9th District, and CO of the Air Station Traverse City. Detroit MSO, Toledo MSO and Duluth MSO have been invited to attend. As of the tentative agenda we don't have a response from those three units. LT Mark Locklear will be here from Toledo.

We have been fortunate this year to have some good subjects addressed, including man overboard and firefighting. We will be demonstrating retrieval equipment at poolside that will be brought to the Industry Days by Land and Marine Products. Jason's Cradle, a retrieval device, and Rescue Randy, which some of you have heard about, will be on site. Ray Meyer from Superior Marine will be bringing survival suits and a raft to inflate. Open house at the Academy will be from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a vendor's reception from 6:00 p.m. on.

On Friday we have a program on crew training and vessel safety. By looking at the agenda you can see we have a full slate of speakers. You will notice this year we do have the FCC, so bring your concerns. Some of the topics being addressed are: tugging issues; licensing insurance; new regs coming down concerning firefighting on tugs; the Corps of Engineers concerns of dredging, water and harbor. Peter Lauridsen of the PVA, Bob Dunn, Rick Brown and Chris Branson will also be taking part in the program. Firefighting will be addressed by a representative of MARAD and issues concerning the Great Lakes by Al Ames and Steve Thorpe. Also on weather issues will be Dave Guenther, NOAA Marquette, Amy Seeley of the Chicago weather office, and a representative of the Gaylord weather office. After these sessions will be an open house at the Traverse Coast Guard Station. Friday evening we will have our fun night which we had a couple years ago. The vendors reception will continue also and give you a chance to win some neat prizes and have conversation with many of our speakers and the vendors.

Saturday we will continue on with the program and will be dismissing by noontime. We have a slate of interesting speakers covering subjects that are all dear to our hearts on the Great Lakes. Speakers include Dennis Hale, survivor of the Morrell, and Richard Ingalls will be presenting a professionally done video on the consecration of the gravesite of the Edmund Fitzgerald that occurred last summer on the Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw.

The Holiday Inn is where we will be hosting Industry Days, and to make room reservations call 1-800-888-8020. Make sure you identify yourselves as an attendee of the UGLCA Industry Days. All in all, we hope to see you in attendance, as it is shaping up to be a great program.

Sincerely,

 Jack Cork

President, UGLCA
