MacArthur Lock closes for the season

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – The MacArthur Lock in Sault Ste. Marie closed Dec. 17 for safety
inspections and routine maintenance. The branch chief on site said the maintenance period is
critical for the 800-foot long, 80-year-old lock’s operations during the shipping season.

In addition to inspections, the dam will be dewatered, and crews will replace fender timbers on
the piers, as well as any damaged electrical and mechanical systems. The Poe Lock will remain
open until Jan. 15, or until commercial traffic ceases.
