Rainfall Sends Great Lakes Water Levels Up

April 7, 2026

In March, rainfall across the Great Lakes Basin was 65% above average. The wet weather across all basins resulted in above-average water supplies for all the Great Lakes. Lakes Michigan-Huron, St. Clair, Erie, and Ontario rose 3 to 7 inches from February to March. Lake Superior remained near its February level through March. All lakes are now within their periods of seasonal rise and are expected to remain rising through mid- to late- summer, depending on the lake. All lakes were below their long-term average monthly mean water levels for March, except Lake Ontario, which matched its long-term average.
